Order of Friars Minor in Great Britain

The Franciscan International Study Centre closes

Following from the recommendation of the Trustees of the Franciscan International Study Centre, Canterbury, and in conjunction with the Conventual Franciscans, the FISC will close its doors this June 2017. The Custos of the Friars Minor in Great Britain, Brother Patrick Lonsdale OFM, writes:

It is with a sense of pride and gratitude, but also of sadness, that we prepare for the closing of the FISC. Many Friars and others have happy memories of their time at the Centre. The lack of students in formation deprives the Centre of a vital experience of Franciscan brotherhood, and this was one of the principal features of the Centre's ethos and attraction.

With the prospect of a new Franciscan University in Rome, combining the resources of the Conventuals, Capuchins and Friars Minor, further possibilities open up of our making a noteworthy contribution to the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition there.

We will press for at least some of the teaching to be in English, to attract Franciscans of the English-speaking world.
