THE BLESSING OF NEW JOINT BUILDINGS FOR ST FRANCIS SCHOOL

St Francis Catholic Primary School in Craigmillar has moved into magnificant new buildings where it shares a campus with Niddrie Mill Primary School.  The new complex is designed to be a central feature of the regeneration of Craigmillar and is number 20 on the first new street to be named as Moffat Way.  (The Moffat sisters Agnes and Janet went down the local coal mines as children and gave testimony in the 1840s to a Parliamentary Commission which led to the employment of children under ten in the mines becoming illegal).  The School opened in its new home in September 2008 and on Monday, 6th October (two days after the feast of Saint Francis), Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, celebrated the first Mass there and blessed the School.  A number of parents, parishioners and invited guests were also there.  Fathers  Antony Collins (Guardian and Parish priest), Reginald Clancy and John Harding of the Craigmillar Friary concelebrated the Mass with the Cardinal.  During the Mass all the lights went out!  They are designed to do so whenever they detect no movement in the room for half an hour - a striking witness to the silent attentiveness of the children and adults present.  As a treat for the 140 pupils the friars provided ice cream for the children.

The Cardinal and Father Antony Collins join the children in licking an ice cream.  The Head Teacher, Mrs Margaret Duff, enjoyed one as well: can you spot her among the children?
