SIDELIGHTS ON THE ARCHIVES OF THE PROVINCE

On Wednesday evening, 3rd March 2010, in a lecture room of the International Franciscan Study Centre, Fr Ninian Arbuckle, the Provincial Archivist, gave an illustrated talk entitled “THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY”, a mostly anecdotal account of the Friars Minor in Post-Reformation England as recorded in the OFM archives. There was a good turn-out of about 50 people to hear the light-hearted exposition of some curious sidelights on the lives of the friars in England through the centuries as he has discovered them in managing the archives.  This was an additional item in the list of events celebrating the Eighth Centenary of the Franciscan Rule 1209-2009.

THE EIGHTH CENTENARY CELEBRATION COMES TO AN END

A concelebrated Mass in Westminster Cathedral on 25th March 2010 brought to a close the celebrations of the eighth centenary of the Rule of St Francis and the existence of the Franciscan Order.  The actual centenary was on 16 April 2009, and for the year since then celebrations have taken place in this country as throughout the world.  Presiding over this concluding event was Fr James McCurry, OFM Conventual, who is the General Delegate for his Order in Great Britain and Ireland and who preached the homily. The Mass was that of the Solemnity of the Annunciation and the hymns were all Marian.  There was a large congregation of Franciscans and their friends who were able to meet at a reception afterwards in the Cathedral Hall.
